Abstract

Because of its good wood properties and beautiful crown shape, Catalpa bungei C, A, Mey is a valuable tree spcies known as "North China fir" and is commonly used for timber plantation as well as ornamental purposes. Under natural conditions, it flowers every year, but seldom bears fruits. Thus, its propagation must rely on its vegetative organs. Our recent investigation has revealed that self-sterility seems to be the underlying cause for fruitlessness of Chinese Catalpa. Pollinations between individual trees were carefully manipulated. Seeds obtained germinated promptly and produced seedlings with vigorous growth,
