Abstract:
Finger joining has been proved an effective method for extending timber length. The authors of this article made cross experiments on the present-day commonly applied type of finger joint, using eastern larch (Larix larcina). The experiments showed that the urea-resin adhesive produced a better effect; a bigger pressure from both ends was preferable, generally about 30kg/cm2; loading directions of the finger joint did not significantly affect the static bending strength with the vertical direction loading being a little preferable than the horizontal. The value of the static bending strength of the joint could be as high as 86% of that of the control specimen of normal wood. The value of the elastic modulus of the static bending of the joint was also determined.
