Abstract:

【Objective】 The scientific forest management should be established based on the ecological rationality. A comprehensive evaluation of forest ecological functions and an analysis of driving factors at the regional scale can provide scientific references for the formulation of forest management plans. 【Method】 Guangzhou City in the Pearl River Delta was selected as the case study area, and 148 fixed plot data of continuous forest resource inventories from 1979 to 2012 in eight periods were collected as the main information source. The spatiotemporal changes and driving factors of forest ecological functions were analyzed based on the construction of the ecological function index. 【Result】 (1) From 1979 to 2012, the number of plots with improved forest ecological functions in the study area was greater than the number of plots with the decreased. The proportion of middle and high grade plots showed a steady increasing trend, whereas the proportion of low grade plots showed a stepwise downward trend. (2) From 1979 to 2012, the spatial aggregation of forest ecological functions in the study area showed a complex change process that first increased, then declined sharply, and then slowly increased. The geographical distribution centers of the high-value points of ecological functions gradually shifted from south to north and west to east. (3) The geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis showed that the first four main driving factors affecting the spatial difference in forest ecological functions in the study area were ranked as follows: altitude>vegetation fractional coverage>slope> per capita gross domestic product (GDP). 【Conclusion】 The occupation and degradation of forest land caused by urbanization, industrialization and the impact of changes in forestry policies and regulations on forest farmers’ enthusiasm for the forest management are the main driving factors causing changes in regional forest ecological functions. Strengthening the forest management and enhancing forestland protection are the only viable approaches to improving regional forest ecology.
