Abstract: Study on local varieties of tung oil trees (Aleurites fordii Hemsl.) is necessary for the utilization of local variety resources and for their genetic improvement. Based on the experiences of the local peasants and our investigation, tung oil trees in Zhejiang can be classified into 5 local varieties.(1) Pedestal tung: Female inflorescens with short peduncle come out solitarily on the top of new shoots. Large fruit with thick pericarp also comes on there (Plates I, l; II, 1 and III, 1).(2) Five talon tung:Usually there are about five clustered female flowers with short peduncle and consequently about five clustered balls of fruit on the top of the shoot, fruit being large and with thick pericarp (Plates I, 4; II, 3 and III, 2). (3) Few-flowered hanging tung: Inflorescence cymose consists of about 10 flowers on the average, usually with only one pistillate flower on the terminal of a rachis surrounded by staminate flowers. Fruit is large, usually single, occasionally two or three in cluster; pedicals are short or medium in length (Plates I, 2; II, 2 and HI, 3).(4) Hanging tung: Inflorescence dichasial compound cyme consists of 20-50 flowers coming out on the tops of a terminal and some lateral rachises, and the rest flowers are staminate. The fruit-cluster usually contains 5-6 balls, occasionally up to 20-30, fruit being small, and pendulous, with long pedicels and thin, smooth pericarp (Plates I, 3; II, 4 and III, 4) .(5) Wild tung: Cyme compound consists of more than 50 flcwers on the average. Most of them are staminate flowers; only a few female flowers together with some bisexal ones blow on the terminal of the particularly long rachis. Fruit-balls are pendulous; most of them are irregular in shape. This variety yields poorly (Plates I, 5, 6; II, 5 and III, 5) .The characters and yields of the five local varieties mentioned above are given in this paper, and a program for the improvement of the utilization of the local varieties of tung oil trees is suggested.
