Abstract: An investigation of the food-habit of some birds has been made in Cnun-Shan area out of Nanking during the past three years. of 620 samples collected 13 species have been identifiea taxonomically. By examining Thies esophagus and stomaches all species but Passer monlanus saturatus Slej. are mostly insect feeding birds. Some species such as Cuculus saturatus horsfieldi Moore, uenarocopos major ( Linne ), Hirundo rustica gutturalis Scopoli, Hirundo daurica nepalensis Hodyson, Oriolus chinensis diffusus Sharpe, Parus major artatus Thayer et Bangs, Motacilla alba ocularis Swinhoe, and Lanius cr-istatus lucionensis Linne, almost wholly live on insects Which are mostly destructive to agrecultural cropsand forest fees. Others namely Cyanopica cyanaswinhoe Hartert, Pica pica sericea Gould, Pycnonotus sinensis sinensis (Gmelin), and Turdus naumanni naumanni Temminck, Though sometimes destructive to someplants, mostly feed on agricultural and forest insects, All these species, because of their great value in reducing damage from fnsects snd smaller rodent pests should be protected and encouraged.Based on monthly examination of 418 samples, Passer montanus saturatus Stej. ate all kinds of grains which tolel up yearly 49.09% by weight, almost time the amount of insects and grass seeda altogather. Its insect hunting activities have been found mainly confined to tne feeding period from April to June and destroyed a large number of beneficial insects. Apparently the destructive effect of sparrows upon agricultural crops greatly out weighs theis beneficial influence. It shauld he contralled in every way Possible.
