Abstract: Xingdoushan, now a preserved area, is at the juncture of the three counties. Lichuan, Xianfeng, and Enshi in the southwest of Hubei Province. Geographically, it is in the mid-subtropic zone with the centre at the latitude of 30?3’N and the longitude of 109?7/E. The whole area covers about 2880 hactares. In accordance with the 1009 specimens of trees and shrubs collected by the authors themselves in 1980 and some others by the late professor w. C. Cheng and Mr. C. T. Hwa in 1948, there are 595 species belonging to 247 genera and 99 families in the flora. Four new species and varities have been found and the distributions of 20 species recorded for the first time in Hubei province. The woody flora of Xingdoushan belongs to the evergreen broadleaf forest regions in the mid-subtropic zone, The prevailing representative families are Lauraceae, Fagaceae, Magnoliaceae, etc.The fundamental features of the woody flora in Xingdoushan may be summarized as follows.1 . Complex geographical elements. The geographical distributions of the genera can be devided into 13 types.2 . Very ancient origin of the flora. Genetically, there are many ancient and primitive genera, such as Ginkgo, Bretschneidera, Sargentodoxa and Da-vidia.3 . Rich endemic species. 12 genera Of such kinds found in the flora make up 5.6% of all the Chinese endemic genera (totaling 214) and 16.7% of all the Chinese endemic genera of woody plants (totaling 72).The flora has a close relation with Shennongjia in the same province.
