This paper reviews and comments on the current preservative treatment methods for woodbased composites, and highlights their characteristics and key points. The methods involved include raw material selection & pretreatment, inprocess treatment and postprocess treatment. As reconstituted engineered products, the most efficient, simple and costeffective method for preserving woodbased composites is inprocess treatment, i.e., to incorporate the preservatives into the products during their manufacture if the preservatives are resincompatible, heatstable and nonvolatile. The selection of preservatives and methods for protecting different woodbased composites must be based on the constituted wood elements, structure, manufacturing process, application of the products and the binders used as well.
