Abstract

Tests at a laboratory-scale of a hybrid poplar, I-69 (Populus deltoides cv. ’Lux’ I -69/55) as the raw material of composite plywood have been made and influences of materials such as veneer, strand, resin, etc., on the properties of composite plywood studied.By orthogonal joint, single-layer veneers were used for both surfaces, oriented single-layer mat was used for core and urea-formaldehyde resin for binder, and then a composite plywood of 300×300×10mm was made by one step. Seven basic properties, i. e., moisture content, specific gravity, MOR, MOE, IB, thickness swell after water absorption and relative nail-holding power were tested.Experimental results show: 1, It is feasible to use I -69 as raw materials of composite plywood. 2, Properties of composite plywood can be considerably affected by three factors: surface veneer thickness, strand size and resin content. Suitable technological parameters should be: face veneer thickness 1.2-1.8mm, length × width × thickness of strand 70×5-7×0.45mm, resin content 9%.Analyses have also been made for the types for failure in static bend.
