Abstract

A randomi experimental design was conducted to investigate the effects of growth medium and container size on growth dynamic of Magnolia sprengeri Pamp.. The result indicated that the medium compositions and container size had a significant influence on seedling growth. In general, seedlings grown in containers with medium composed of humus grew extremely well, while seedlings grown in containers with yellow soft soils or sandy soils showed a bad growth performance. Because M. sprengeri had a strong root system, it was found that containers with 10 cm× 20 cm dimensions provided the best growth of the seedling. The best growth medium needed 50% humus and 50% river sand. The implementation of the growth protocol mentioned above guaranteed optimal growth in terms of seedling height, diameter, and biomass. The protocol also had potential to save costs associated with the much-valued seeding growth, meanwhile the root-soil system had potential to form a good root cycling.
