Abstract: Pollen grain characteristics of 21 Chimonanthus praecox cultivars in 3 groups were examined and compared under scanning electron microscope (SEM), and principal component analysis and cluster analysis were conducted based on observation results. The results showed that the pollen grain was in midsize, and in suboblate to globular shape. The exine ornamentation could be divided into two types: helminthoid and quasihelminthoid. Pollen morphology of the cultivars was quite similar, but there were certain differences in details of ornamentation, size of pollen grains, length and width of colpus, so they could provide ancillary evidence for cultivar identification. There was difference between the result of cluster analysis for pollen morphology and that of traditional morphological classification, there was no direct relationship between pollen morphology and color of inner or medium petals.
