Abstract: In this study, we investigated the soil heavy metal pollution and protective effect of greenway construction along ShanghaiNanjing highway.Soil samples were taken on both sides of the highway under different landuse conditions (with or without greenway). Results showed that there were no significant changes in heavy metal (Cu, Pb and Zn) contents along soil depths. No negative linear correlations between heavy metal (Cu, Pb and Zn) contents and the vertical distance from highway were found. The greenway construction had significant protective effect on soil heavy metal pollution. However, the structure, width, and configuration mode of the greenway had great influence on the protection function from soil heavy metal pollution.
