Abstract: Pennisetum americanum pyrolysis behavior and mechanism were studied at a slow heating rate by thermogravimetric(TG) analysis coupled with fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).The results showed that the decomposition of P. americanum mainly occurred at the temperature range of 220 to 500 ℃.The weight loss became quite slow when temperature further increased over 500 ℃ and the amount of residue finally decreased to 533 %. FTIR analysis showed that there were carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, alkane, aldehydes, acids produced during the P. americanum pyrolysis process.Based on the TG curve and infrared spectra, P. americanum pyrolysis kinetic was studied. P. americanum pyrolysis process was divided into three stages, corresponding with 301.51, 88.39 and 330.58 kJ/mol for activation energy respectively.
