Abstract: The forestry data and the image data collected by the sensor devices can’t be transferred to the users in many regions of the remote forest areas because of the unavailability of the public network coverage. To solve this problem, a satellite transmission system oriented the sensor network equipment in remote forest areas was designed in this paper. Data, including images collected by the camera from the RS232 port and the Ethernet port related to forestry were transferred in an active or passive manner through the Digi M10 satellite modem of the ORBCOMM satellite network. At the same time, to reduce the satellite transmission pressure, splitting and compressing data blocks were also implemented in this system. Tests showed that the satellite data transmission rate was approximately 31.27 Byte/s when the satellite signal was good. When the sensor data acquisition interval was approximately 100 s, the satellite module can upload the sensor data in a timely manner. This system overcomes the data transmission difficulties between the sensor network devices and the internet when the public networks are unavailable.
