Malus‘Zanchun’: a new ornamental crabapple cultivar

Abstract

【Objective】In order to expand the resources of plants that were used in landscape in China, a new crabapple cultivar with high ornamental value was selected. 【Method】Malus‘Zanchun’ was obtained from free-pollinated seeds by selecting and breeding the offspring of M. ‘Hongying’. 【Result】‘Zanchun’ is an excellent ornamental crabapple cultivar with red flowers and green leaves,the flowers are large and dense,and the flower color changes from purple at the beginning to pale pink at the end. Including the flower bud viewing period,the whole flower viewing period can reach 20 days. Pear-shaped fruits are bluish green at first,yellow when ripe. 【Conclusion】‘Zanchun’ has strong adaptability, rapid growth, high ornamental value and good application prospects.
