Seven new crabapple cultivars such as ‘Rui Qin’

Abstract

【Objective】The aim of this study is to provide plant materials for greening and beautification of urban and rural areas in China.【Method】 excellent germplasm resources of crabapple at home and abroad were collected for cross breeding, and new varieties with excellent ornamental characteristics and strong adaptability were selected. 16 superior clones of crabapple introduced from abroad were used to conduct natural hybridization with eight domestic germplasms in Changyi of Shandong Province from 1999 to 2002. 【Result】In 2007, twelve excellent individuals were selected from the hybrid progenies after comprehensive measurement of ornamental characteristics and growth characteristics. In 2008, after further DUS test, seven new varieties were selected and approved by State Forestry Administration in 2015-2016. 【Conclusion】The seven new varieties had advantages of both flowers and fruits appreciation, a long viewing period, good beautification effects, strong adaptability, high afforestation survival rates and etc.. It is suitable for courtyards, roads and square greening in Shandong and its surrounding areas.
