‘Bairihuacai’ : a new Hibiscus mutabilis cultivar

Abstract

【Objective】 Hibiscus mutabilis Linn.is a traditional ornamental flower with a long history of cultivation in China. Breeding new Hibiscus mutabilis varieties is significant in the development of the Hibiscus mutabilis industry. 【Method】 ‘Bairihuacai’ is a new Hibiscus mutabilis cultivar developed from a mutant cross-breeding of ‘R-1’ as the female parent and ‘Jinqiuhong’ as the male parent. Cutting propagation was conducted, and the variety characteristics were investigated. 【Result】 ‘Bairihuacai’ is a tufted shrub or small tree with double petals. The flower is pink at the start and turns purplish red at a later stage. The flowering period is from June to November and lasts for more than 180 days. 【Conclusion】 With a long flowering period, beautiful flower posture, and strong resistance, ‘Bairihuacai’ is in accordance with the specificity of new varieties and has a high value in landscape application.
