Abstract

【Objective】Birds are an important part of earth’s biodiversity and an indicator for the quality of the ecological environment. In this study, bird community structure and biodiversity in Songyang County, Zhejiang Province were explored. Informations on species, distributions, quantities and habitat status of rare or endangered birds were analyzed in order to support local biodiversity conservation, regional biodiversity monitoring and assessments. 【Method】Songyang County was divided into 17 working grids of 10 km ×10 km, each containing 24 transects. There were three habitat types: woodland, farmland and wetland. The survey period was from December 2020 to November 2021. The diversity of Songyang birds was analyzed by calculating the species richness index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Simpson’s diversity index and Pielou’s evenness index; the nested two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the effects of season and habitat. 【Result】 (1) In total, 249 species of wild bird were observed throughout the period, belonging to 18 orders and 62 families. The number of species of bird observed in each season was in the order of spring (195 species) > winter (128 species) > autumn (104 species) > summer (89 species). In total, 52 species appeared in all seasons. The number of bird species observed in various habitats was in the order of wetland (140 species) > woodland (125species) > farmland (109 species). In total, 28 species appeared in all habitats. (2) Among all birds, there were 25 nationally protected animals including 4 first-level and 21 second-level ones. There was 1 critically endangered species, 2 endangered species, 3 vulnerable species and 8 near threatened species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of threatened species. (3) All bird biodiversity indices (species richness index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Simpson’s diversity index and Pielou’s evenness index) were affected significantly by season and habitat (P < 0.01). The species richness index was significantly affected by the interaction of season and habitat, but the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Simpson’s diversity index, and Pielou’s evenness index were not significantly affected by this interaction (P > 0.05). 【Conclusion】Rich bird diversity in songyang is closely related to the local natural environment and spring has the most bird species. Woodland wetland, and farmland are all important bird habitats, with > 100 species observed in each. Among them, bird abundance in wetland is higher than that in woodland and farmland.

Ecosystem services are natural processes that benefit humans. Birds contribute the four types of services recognized by the UN Millennium Ecosystem Assessment—provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting services. In this review, we concentrate primarily on supporting services, and to a lesser extent, provisioning and regulating services. As members of ecosystems, birds play many roles, including as predators, pollinators, scavengers, seed dispersers, seed predators, and ecosystem engineers. These ecosystem services fall into two subcategories: those that arise via behavior (like consumption of agricultural pests) and those that arise via bird products (like nests and guano). Characteristics of most birds make them quite special from the perspective of ecosystem services. Because most birds fly, they can respond to irruptive or pulsed resources in ways generally not possible for other vertebrates. Migratory species link ecosystem processes and fluxes that are separated by great distances and times. Although the economic value to humans contributed by most, if not all, of the supporting services has yet to be quantified, we believe they are important to humans. Our goals for this review are 1) to lay the groundwork on these services to facilitate future efforts to estimate their economic value, 2) to highlight gaps in our knowledge, and 3) to point to future directions for additional research.

Significant uncertainties remain of how global change impacts on species richness, relative abundance and species composition. Recently, a discussion emerged on the importance of detecting and understanding long-term fluctuations in species composition and relative abundance and whether deterministic or non-deterministic factors can explain any temporal change. However, currently, one of the main impediments to providing answers to these questions is the relatively short time series of species diversity datasets. Many datasets are limited to 2 years and it is rare for a few decades of data to be available. In addition, long-term data typically has standardization issues from the past and/or the methods are not comparable. We address several of these uncertainties by investigating bird diversity in a globally important mountain ecosystem of the Hkakabo Razi Landscape in northern Myanmar. The study compares bird communities in two periods (pre-1940: 1900-1939 vs. post-2000: 2001-2006). Land-cover classes have been included to provide understanding of their potential role as drivers. While species richness did not change, species composition and relative abundance differed, indicating a significant species turn over and hence temporal change. Only 19.2% of bird species occurred during both periods. Land-cover model predictors explained part of the species richness variability but not relative abundance nor species composition changes. The temporal change is likely caused by minimal methodological differences and partially by land-cover.

Abstract

The line transect methods are widely used in wildlife population census. The history of development, fundamental concepts and general types of the methods were introduced in this paper. The estimation of densities of bird populations for the line transect methods, including the Merikallio’s, Gates’s, Fourier-series estimator and distance sampling, was discussed. We concluded that the latter of above was advantageous over the three others, if the distances of birds to transect were available, convenient and precise.

Abstract
Given a resource gradient (e.g. light intensity, prey size) in a community, species evolve to use different parts of this gradient; competition between them is thereby reduced. Species relationships in the community may be conceived in terms of a multidimensional coordinate system, the axes of which are the various resource gradients (and other aspects of species relationships to space, time, and one another in the community). This coordinate system defines a hyperspace, and the range of the space that a given species occupies is its niche hypervolume, as an abstract characterization of its intra‐community position, or niche. Species evolve toward difference in niche, and consequently toward difference in location of their hypervolumes in the niche hyperspace. Through evolutionary time additional species can fit into the community in niche hypervolumes different from those of other species, and the niche hyperspace can become increasingly complex. Its complexity relates to the community's richness in species, its alpha diversity.
