Differences of stand structures and evaluation of management urgency for various management stages of natural secondary poplar-birch forest

Differences of stand structures and evaluation of management urgency for various management stages of natural secondary poplar-birch forest
【Objective】The forest structure determines its function. Natural secondary forest is a type of degraded forest ecosystem formed after the interference of primary forests. This study aims to explore the structural characteristics of natural secondary poplar-birch forests and clarify their driving factors, providing a basis for promoting the quality improvement of natural forests and the restoration of ecological functions.【Method】The differences in spatial structure parameters and comprehensive evaluation index (FSS) of natural secondary poplar-birch forests at different development stages were compared and analyzed. Based on the management urgency evaluation system, the management urgency level of natural secondary poplar-birch forests at different development stages in Weichang County was evaluated.【Result】(1)As the poplar-birch secondary forests develop, the FSS value gradually increases, with an average improvement of 0.13 in the FSS of managed stands. (2)The urgency evaluation index of stand management in the early stage of natural secondary forest of untended poplar and birch was above 0.60, and the stand was far away from the characteristics of healthy and stable forest, so it must be managed. In the middle stage of development, the urgency evaluation index of forest management was about 0.40, which was very necessary for management. In the late stage of development, the urgency evaluation index of forest management was about 0.30, which could be moderately managed.(3)After tending, the evaluation indices of forest management urgency in each development stage of poplar-birch natural secondary forest was lower than that before tending, and the management urgency indices based on the eight-index system was generally lower than that of the 11 indeices system.【Conclusion】With the advancement of the developmental stages of the poplar-birch secondary forest stands, the stand structure gradually optimizes, and the urgency for management significantly decreases. The results of this study can lay the foundation for integrating the management technical system of natural secondary poplar-birch forests in the Weichang region.
