Synergy and influencing factors of ecological, economic and social benefits of the Qiantang River basin ecological conservation and restoration project

Synergy and influencing factors of ecological, economic and social benefits of the Qiantang River basin ecological conservation and restoration project
【Objective】Scientifically evaluating and identifying the coordination of ecological, economic, and social benefits (EES) and the key influencing factors in Ecological Protection and Restoration Projects (EPRP) within key ecological functional zones is of great significance for promoting the sustainable development of these projects.【Method】This study assesses the benefits of the EPRP in the Qiantang River Basin through a county-level indicator system. The ecological, economic, and social benefits and their comprehensive level from 2013 to 2022 were quantified using the entropy weight method. To this end, the coordination level among these benefits was determined via a coupling coordination degree model. The integrated application of kernel density estimation, bivariate spatial autocorrelation, and Geodetector then revealed the relationship between the comprehensive benefits and coordination level, pinpointing key driving factors.【Result】(1) From 2013 to 2022, the EES comprehensive benefit level of the EPRP in the Qiantang River Basin showed a growth trend and presents significant spatial heterogeneity characteristics. (2) From 2013 to 2022, the EES benefit synergy level showed a gradual growth trend, and the number of regions with high collaboration levels gradually increases. (3) There was an obvious positive spatial correlation between the EES comprehensive benefit level and its synergy level in various regions of the Qiantang River Basin. In 2022, Lin’an District, Tonglu County, Fuyang District, Xihu District, and Xiaoshan District in the middle and lower reached are high-high aggregation areas, while Huangshan District were Huizhou District were low-low aggregation areas. (4) The EES benefits synergy level of the EPRP in the Qiantang River basin and its relationship with the comprehensive benefit level were mainly affected by factors such as ecological resources, economic scale, population overview, livelihood improvement, and public services.【Conclusion】It is recommended that ecological conservation, economic development, and livelihood improvement be integrated into ecological protection and restoration. Enhancing comprehensive benefits through multi-stakeholder collaborative governance and promoting regional sustainable development via high-quality engineering practices are crucial.
