Abstract

【Objective】 This study quantitatively assessed the wintering habitat suitability for the Red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) in the core area of Yancheng National Nature Reserve, Jiangsu Province, and identified key factors influencing habitat selection. The results provide a scientific basis for ecological restoration and sustainable management of crane habitats.【Method】Utilizing the MaxEnt (Maximum Entropy) model integrated with GIS technology, habitat suitability was evaluated based on five key environmental factors. The cumulative contribution of each factor was analyzed.【Result】Habitat suitability was predominantly determined by habitat type and proximity to water. The primary environmental factors influencing crane distribution were distance to water, distance to Suaeda salsa, distance to Spartina alterniflora, distance to Phragmites australis, and distance to bare mudflats, collectively contributing 92.5%. The most suitable (1 043.82 hm2, 7.58% of total area) and highly suitable (1 674.09 hm2, 12.13%) zones were primarily located in the northwestern and southwestern sectors. The invasive S. alterniflora poses a significant threat to crane habitat selection and food resource acquisition. In contrast, human disturbances had minimal impact on habitat suitability within the core area. 【Conclusion】Enhancing habitat suitability for the Red-crowned crane necessitates focused protection of water sources, restoration of native vegetation, and effective control of Spartina alterniflora invasion in the core area of Yancheng National Nature Reserve.
