Abstract: The germination characteristics of Melia azedarach L. seeds from Binhai of Jiangsu province and Chuzhou of Anhui province were studied and compared at various salinity regimes(0,50,100,150,200 mmol/L NaCl). Germination rate, germination index, vigor index, length of hypocotyl and radicle were determined. The results showed that germination percentage of Melia azedarach L. seeds were subjected to inhibition at all degrees. The germination index and vigor index decreased with the increase of salt stress, but different decrease patterns were observed for these two subjects. Seeds vigor was inhibited earlier than germinability under the saline conditions. The growth of hypocotyl and radicle had different responses to salinities, and the salt concentrations had less influence on the radicle. Binhai seeds showed better salt tolerance than Chuzhou seeds, while the germination rate, germination index, vigor index and seedling length of Melia azedarach L. seeds from Binhai were better than those from Chuzhou along under the same NaCl concentration.
