Abstract: In some forest, positioning by the satellites is different to be carried out due to weakness satellite signal or no signal. For this reason, an application method by combination of satellite positioning with ground positioning is proposed in this paper. To prove whether ground positioning technology is feasible in forest, the experiments to investigate the relationship between wireless location signal strength variation and distance, and the effects of the trees blocking on the signal strength experiments in the high canopy stands and carried out. The results show that the propagation of wireless signal in the forest environment and the ideal environment are similar. This propagation characteristic can be used to revise the rules of the ideal propagation model. From the theoretical point of view, the application of the wireless location technology in high-canopy forest stands is proved. This method provided a theoretical basis for the establishment of propagation models and the study of positioning algorithm.
