Abstract: 【Objective】This study explored a quantitative assessment method to establish the differences between natural and constructed green sponge spaces and investigated the feasibility of the multivariate curve resolution(MCR)model to evaluate the suitability of urban green spaces for sponge cities in order to find a new methodology for sponge city construction.【Method】Considering the expansion of urban land as the expansion of environmental protection land and urban construction land, this research took Yangzhou as its object of study, selected the appropriate ecological and construction sources, and used the cost distance tool of the software ArcGIS to simulate the city expansion process under the MCR model framework, by means of the formula FMCRp=FMCRex -FMCRux to indicate the green sponge suitability property.【Result】The results of the MCR formula for 33 potential green sponges were analyzed. Areas of FMCRp > 0 refer to the natural green sponges, which are suitable for strict protection, while areas of FMCRp < 0 refer to the sponges that can be artificially constructed, which are suitable for connection with urban rainwater facilities. 【Conclusion】The research results indicate that the MCR model can accurately and intuitively reflect the suitability and the directions for future use of potential urban green sponges, while the research method can provide guidelines for the selection of green sponge construction methods.
