Abstract: 【Objective】 Study the effects of gradual drought and rewatering on the physiological indexes of four herbaceous peony cultivars, and provide a scientific basis for screening drought-resistant varieties of herbaceous peony. 【Method】 Four Paeonia lactiflora(herbaceous peony)cultivars were used as experimental materials, and the physiolo-gical changes in herbaceous peony seedlings were analyzed after drought stress for 0, 7, 14 or 21 d and rewatering for 7 d in pot experiments. The drought resistance of the four herbaceous peony cultivars was comprehensively evaluated, and the major indexes were selected using principal component analysis. 【Result】 With the extension of drought stress time, leaf relative water content(RWC), net photosynthetic rate(Pn), stomatal conductance(Gs), and transpiration rate(Tr)decreased; relative electrical conductivity(REC), malondialdehyde(MDA)content, and soluble sugar content(SSC)increased; stomatal limitation(Ls)increased and then decreased; and intercellular carbon dioxide(Ci)and chlorophyll(Chl)content initially decreased and then increased. After rewatering, RWC, Ci, and Ls were restored to the control level, and the other parameters recovered to some degree. Chlorophyll content was concentrated under drought stress and returned to normal under rehydration conditions. Principal component analysis showed that two principal components could explain 91.459% of the data on herbaceous peony cultivar drought resistance. The drought resistance of the four herbaceous peony cultivars was evaluated according to the comprehensive evaluation value(D), and the importance of each index in drought resistance was evaluated according to the weight of each index. 【Conclusion】 Based on the result of principal component analysis, the drought resistance of the four herbaceous peony cultivars were determined as: ‘Fen Yu Nu’>‘Zhong Sheng Fen’>‘Zhao Yuan Fen’>‘Wan Xia Hong’. Based on the weight of each index, seven indexes with relatively high weights(Pn, Tr, Gs, SSC, REC, MDA and RWC)could be used as the major indexes of drought resistance of herbaceous peony.
