Abstract

China is rich in bamboo resource. Bamboo is widely used in our country as a material in house and bridge building, furniture, paper pulp, etc. Therefore, indexes of physical and mechanical properties of bamboo woods are very important. This paper deals with some properties of bamboo woods of 61 species, namely, basic volume weight, percentage of swelling, density of vascular bundle, compressive strength parallel to the grain, tensile strength parallel to the g"ain, radial and tangential bending strength and some other properties. The 9,000 samples of 311 culms experimented on were collected from 26 districts in H provinces of China from 1963 to1978This report consists of three parts: the collection and preparation of the mate rial for the experiments, methods used in the experiments, and the test results and analyses which include: l, the influence of the cross-section cuts on the compressive strength parallel to the grain; 2, the compressive strength parallel to the grain(Dw) in relation to bamboo water content (P-w), which is given in the equation: Dw = aP-Wb; 3, the effect of bamboo age (A) on the physical and mechanical properties: Pm = a + bA + cA2; 4, the physical and mechanical properties at any height (Ha) of the culm: Pm=a + bH+cHx2; 5, the physical and mechanical properties of bamboo wood influenced by the site class and silvicultural treatment of bamboo stands; and 6, the physical and mechanical properties of different bamboo species.
