Abstract

The analysis of variance was adopted to study the genetic variation of 9 year old open pollinated progenies of masson pine at Fujian Sanming and Fujian Xianyou. The results showed that there were very significant differences among families in growth traits such as height,DBH and stem volume and the variations were mainly controlled by genetic factors. There were some differences among families in wood basic density, wood chemical compositions and wood fiber traits.According to the production of cellulose in individual,10 excellent pulpwood families were selected among 105 families at Fujian Sanming and Fujian Xianyou respectively. The average of the production of cellulose in individual of 10 excellent pulpwood families including W00249 and W00251 in Sanming reached 10.718 kg and the average of their height,DBH and stem volume were 9.55 m?12.4 cm and 0.058 48 m 3 respectively which were 50.39%?93.75% and 173.91% more than the standard of fast growing and high yielding of masson pine in Fujian province. The average of the production of cellulose in individual of 10 excellent pulpwood families including W00307 and W00335 in Xianyou reached 8.240 kg and the average of their height,DBH and stem volume were 7.34 m?11.4 cm and 0.041 72 m 3 respectively which were 52.92% ?132.65% and 210.65% more than the standard of fast growing and high yielding of masson pine in Fujian province. These selected families were very striking in production.
