Abstract: The chemical properties of wood of 16 bald cypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich) provenances of 14 years old were determined, and the results were as follows: (1)There were significant difference in wood cellulose crystallinity, holocellulose content, lignin content, NaOH extractives content and pH of wood of 16 bald cypress provenances. (2)The wood cellulose crystallinity of wood of 16 bald cypress provenances was 74.43%—61.52%, and average was 65.87%, and total variation coefficient was 5.27%, and there also existed significant variation in wood cellulose crystallinity of different height of trunk. The variation ranges of holocellulose content, lignin content, NaOH extractives content and pH were 62.64%—71.53%, 23.98%—29.53%, 3.9%—17.9% and 5.32%—5.07% respectively, and variation coefficients were 3.9%, 6.7%, 44.8% and 1.53%respectively, but there wasn’t significant variation in holocellulose content, lignin content, NaOH extractives content and pH of different height of trunk. (3)On the whole, the holocellulose content of wood of 16 baldcypress provenances was higher, but lignin content and NaOH extractives content were lower, and some provenances could be used as forestation material of pulp wood timber after farther choosing.
