Influences of the snow storm on the leaf litter decomposition dynamics of Phyllostachys heterocycla ecosystem in Wuyi Mountain

Abstract: In January 2008, an extraordinarily serious snow storm occurred in southern China which had serious disturbance and destroy on structure and function of forest ecosystem. We used big litterbag method to study the dynamics of leaf litter decomposition in different damaged level bamboo forests in Wuyi Mountain over one year to learn the influences of snow storm on cycle of substance and energy flow. The result showed that mass loss rate was very quick at the beginning, and then slow down. Decomposition rate of leaf litter increased with the damaged level in summer, but there was no difference in autumn and winter. In spring, decomposition rate in heavy level sites become quicker than it in middle and low level sites again. Decomposition dynamics in the different damaged level bamboo forests is accord with Olson model, and leaf decomposition rates (k) followed to order is: heavy level, middle level, low level. The decomposition rate positively correlated with soil temperature, the aboveground biomass loss caused by the snow storm, but negatively correlated with the canopy closure significantly. It didn’t correlate with soil water content. Our findings indicated that snow storm might accelerate litter decomposition rate.
