Abstract: The coefficient of sound absorption of pressed solid particleboard and extruded tubular particleboard was measured by standing wave tube method under different conditions. The effects of material structure, porosity ratio and surface treatment on the sound absorption property were evaluated. The results showed that the sound absorption property of the extruded tubular particleboard was better than that of pressed solid particleboard. The average coefficient of noise reduction was 0.30 in extruded tubular particleboard, which was higher than that in solid particleboard. The average coefficient of sound absorption of extruded tubular particleboard was above 0.2, which proved that the extruded tubular particleboard could be used as a suitable sound absorption material. Moreover, when the holes in tubular particleboard were arranged in vertical direction, the coefficient of sound absorption was higher than that arranged in horizontal direction. The sanding was a useful method to improve the sound absorption property of these particleboards, especially for pressed solid particleboard.
