Abstract: 1, ThE female C. variegata emits an odorousattractant for the male. The emitting organ of this sex pheromone is located at the head-thorax area of the adult female.2, Active materials of the female were extracted by rinse method in order to eliminate disturbance of masking agents and decrease contamination of impurities.3, The concentrate of crude extract was chromatographed on the silica gel column, and the active fractions were further purified by micro-preparative gas chromatography. The purified active fractions were monitored and tested by means of field bioassay and electroantennogram (EAG).4, The microchemical reactions suggested that this active compound is neither an unsaturated straight-chain acetate or prcpionate nor an alcohol, an aldehyde or a ketone. Therefore, the structure of pheromone of C. variegata is dissimilar to those of any Lepidopterous insects studied. Mass spectral analysis indicated that the molecular weight of the main active compound is 270 and the molecular formula is C17H34O2. Furthermcre, it is possible that this pheromone is composed of multiple components. Further work of structural identification is under way.
