Abstract: Our investigation, just the same as those of other present-day researchers, suggests that the neo-tectonic movement, rooted in erosion and deposition by virtue of vertical movement, exerts important influence on soil forming process and soil distribution, just as other soil forming factors or conditions do. Among soil forming factors the topographical factor, the parent material and the time of soil formation are all under the influence of neo-tectonic movement. In low mountains, neo-tectonic movement constitutes a cardinal condition in governing the remnant impact of paleoclimate and the effect of the recent climate on the rate of soil formation, which, alongside with soil-forming rocks and other factors or conditions, may help to form a number of patterns of soil associations. As these patterns may consist of different great soil groups, it cannot be simply explained by concepts of soil zonality. In this paper we try to elaborate the modes of soil association in low mountains in Jiangsu Province according to geological literature and local soil survey data and find the main pattern of soil association in the intermittent tectonic culminations around Nanjing, Zhenjiang, Yixing and Liyang to be ranker-lithosol-fossil red earth-yellow brown planosol, and the principal pattern in the permanent tectonic culmination near Lianyun Harbour to be mountain meadow soil or humic fossil red earth-ranker or lithosol-yellow brown earth or fossil red earth. We think that as for the soil classification of mountain forest land, it might be proper to group soil pEdons in accordance with soil nature and properties and to use soil association as the mapping unit in the soil map at medium and small scales. And in doing so, in addition to common soil-forming factors and conditions, special attention should be paid to geological conditions in the Quarternary Period, including the effects caused by paleogeographical and paleoclimatic variations and the neo-tectonic movement, etc..
