Abstract: The concept of forest site classification and its role played in forest science are explained. The development of the study of forest site classification arc described with different natural and historical background and different speciality experience of workers in various countries and areas. There have been produced many schools of forest site classifications and evaluations. In this paper, three main approaches of forest site classification are discussed in detail. Most of the inportant methods in these approaches are introduced and evaluated. They are living factor combined method, leading factor combined method and soil-site study in physical enviromental factor approach; site class and site index method, forest habtat classification method and Sukachev’s forest typology in vegetational factor approach and Bogelebyek’s ecological forest typology, Baden-Wurttemberg multi-factor classification method and ecological site classification method in combined multi-faetor (ecosystem) approach. Some advances in forest site classification in our contry are introdueed.Based on discussion of the methods above, the author gives a prospect of the study of forest site classification and evaluation in the future. With regard to the current situation of forest site classification and evaluation in our country, some problems which need to be solved are raised and some solutions suggested.
