Abstract: This paper deals with an influence of bamboo-softening variables on the mechanical properties, the pH values, the free radical content and the relative cellulose crystallinity of bamboo itself, and on the physico-mechanical properties of Reconsolidated Bamboo. The testing results showed thatNaOH treatment for the softening process of bamboo made the intercellular layers of bamboo cells apart, which was helpful to bamboo scrimming, but affected the physico-chemical properties of bambooitself and Reconsolidated Bamboo. The optimum bamboo-softening process is to boil the bamboo for 2to 3 hours with a solution of 3% NaOH.
