Abstract: In this paper, the appropriate growth traits and optimum age of early selection of hybrid pine (Pinus elliottii vat. elliottii (PEE) x P. caribaea var. hondurensis (PCH)) through family selection were studied. The estimated parameters of early selection were height and diameter at breast height (DBH) measured from this family test trail established in Taishan Hongling Seed Orchard of Guangdong. There were 18 families included. Height and DBH was measured every year (except the 7th year after planting) at the second year after planting. The individual volume was calculated according to the value of height and DBH. The last investigation was taken in 2005 with 10-year old. The results showed that there were extremely significant differences in height, DBH and volume among the test hybrid families. It had very strong and stable juvenile-mature genetic correlations. The growth correlation was mainly controlled by heredity, and early selection was effective. There were extremely significant correlations among height at age of two, DBH at age of three, volume at age of three after planting and the volume at age of ten. At the same time, selection efficiency was highest. Therefore, the early selection could be carried out by the strategy of two stages selection, e. g. the first stage selection might be conducted with height at the age of 2-year-old and the final selection completed with volume at the age of 6-year-old. The means of select were saved over 70%families.according to the height at first stage, and saved less than 35%families according to the volume at second stage.
