Abstract: The effect of skidding with a suspended cable on the physical and chemical properties of soil in artificial mixed forest of Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata was investigated. The results showed that the other indexes of physical and chemical properties of soil declined while the volume weight of soil and the damage rate of soil structure were increasing. The surface soil (0—20 cm) were impacted more seriously than the bottom soil (20—40 cm). The bulk density of surface soil and the damage rate of surface soil structure increased 0.02 g/cm and 6.17% respectively, the saturated water retention and the total porosity of top soil decreased 3.65% and 1.98% respectively. The content of main nutrient of top soil, such as organic matter, total N, hydrolytic N, total P, available P, total K and available K, reduced 1.34 g/kg, 0.04 g/kg, 6.46 mg/kg, 0.01 g/kg, 0.04 mg/kg, 1.01 g/kg and 11.00 mg/kg respectively. Besides, the reasons of change of many physical and chemical properties of soil caused by operation of skidding were analyzed. Some technological measures for reducing the damage of skidding by suspended cable on the soil were put forward from the view of ecological harvesting operation.
