Abstract: A new kind of modified PCC was prepared by a new technology to wrap PCC with a gelled cationic starch, and the properties of modified PCC , especially in the aspect of strengthening effect of paper were investigated. Two methods for PCC modification were explored, one was to wrap PCC with cooked starch at high solid content, and the another was to mix the PPC with ungelled starch first and then cook the mixture. The result indicated that the dissolution rate of starch in the first method was low, and the concentration of gelled starch gave great influence on both the dissolution of starch and the properties of paper handsheet. Comparing the PCC obtained from the different usage of starch from 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60%, it was found that the modified PPC from 30% of starch has the following advantages: uniform particle size, low dissolution rate of starch. Furthermore, the tensile index, burst index, surface strength, and ash content were increased by 41.1%, 50%, 45.3%, and 37.5%, respectively.
