Abstract: This experiment was conducted to examine the effects of two kinds of container size(D60 and D40)and two kinds of irrigation methods on growth and nutrient element content of containerized Quercus variabilis Blume seedlings. Results showed that compared with overhead irrigation, seedlings with sub-irrigation saved at least 63.35% of water, and seedling height and root collar diameter increased by about 10.00%, dry mass increased more than 18.40%, the nutrient contents improved more than 18.00%, the nutrient concentration improved by at least 17.00%. Seedlings also showed increase in height, root collar diameter, dry mass, N, P and K contents with container size increasing. Sub-irrigation is not only a water-saving and eco-friendly technology, but also can produce seadlings with equal or better quality in comparison with overhead irrigation.
