Abstract: 【Objective】Based on remote sensing data and 3S technology, studing on the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and evolution of rural settlements provide guidance for promoting the development of beautiful countryside and realizing regional sustainable development.【Method】The spatial and temporal distribution of rural settlements in Yixian County and the driving factors of landscape pattern change across four years were analyzed based on the principle of the kernel density estimation, GIS spatial analysis, landscape pattern index and spatial autocorrelation analysis.【Result】The rural settlements' kernel density estimation of villages and towns in Yixian was weakly aggregated in 2010 and 2012. Meanwhile, the kernel density estimation showed a significant aggregation distribution in 2014 and 2016. In 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, the Moran's I index was greater than 0. There was positive spatial correlation in the rural settlements of Yixian. In 2016, Moran's I index was lower than that in 2014, which showed that the trend of agglomeration and distribution in space was diminished and that the difference in spatial distribution increased in the regions with similar kernel density estimates. Lastly, natural factors such as topography, rivers and other social factors as well as roads, town-economies and population change are the driving factors of the changes in the distribution characteristics of rural settlements in Yixian County.【Conclusion】The study on the characteristics and evolution of the temporal and spatial distribution patterns of rural settlements in Yixian can provide an effective basis for rational planning, settlement optimization, land resource utilization and sustainable development in planning the construction of beautiful villages.
