Abstract: This paper deals with the chemical components, the fibre dimensions and the pulping properties of sixteen species of fast-growing wood, such as the fossil tree (Metaseqvoia glyptostroboids) poplar I-69 (populus. var. deltoides cv. ’Lux’), poplar 1-72 (P. X euramericana cv. ’San Martino’), etc. Besides conventional analyses, acid-soluble lignins have been determined by means of a UV spectrophotometer; conv positions of the sugar residues of holocellulose have been analysed by thin layer chromatography; tension wood existed in poplar 1-69 and poplar 1-72 has also been observed and measured by using electronmicroscope. In addition, preliminary investigations have been made on their pulping properties by soda-anthraguinone process and kraft process. Results indicate that the fossil tree, poplar 1-69 and poplar 1-72 are excellent fast-growing wood which merits consideration in its application to paper-making industry.
