Abstract: The report gives an account of the field work on the giant panda population in Yele natural reserve of the Mianning county in Xiangling mountains from 1994~1995.With droppings as indirect indication the authors used the sampling line method, the inverse line transect method and the traditional method to survey the density of giant panda population. A comparison was made between the new way for investigation and the earlier ones. The field work resulted in the discovery of the approximate number of giant panda in the natural reserve. The density was 0.0325 ind./km 2 .Some countermeasures to protect the giant panda on the basis of local actual situation were put forward.
