Abstract: In this paper, some physical and mechanical properties of oriented strandboard, the relationship between the resin content, the specific gravity, and the physical and mechanical properties are investigated. All experiments were made at a laboratory scale. Species of I-72 (Populus × euramericana cv. san Martino), a hybrid poplar, was used as the raw material. Strands were oriented through an experimental otienter which had been designed by the author. Nine basic pioperties of oriented strandboard were tested: specific gravity, moisture content, MOR, MOE, IB, nail and screw holding power, thickness swell, thermal physical properties and sound absorption. In this paper, physical and mechanical properties of oriented and random strandboard are compared. Some laws of MOR and MOE of oriented strandboard are also discussed. For example, the ratio between the MOR or MOE in the parallel and in the perpendicular direction of oriented strand-board can be adjusted by changing the weight ratio between the strands in the surface and in the core layer, the mathematical model being (Y-K)2 = 2ax, where their curves are parabolic; the average values of MOR or MOE of oriented starndboard in both parallel and perpendicular directions are about equal to that of random stiandboardetc. The question of how to evaluate the orientation efficien-cy of strands is also discussed and a formula expressing the orientation efficiency inthe increase of MOR is put forward, i. e.,
