Preliminary Selection of Superior Families and Plus Tree on Platanus occidentalis L.

Abstract: A five years old provenances testing of Platanus occidentalis L. results was reported in this article, which was planted in Songjiang area of Shanghai, China. Based on the five years performance, the superior families and individual trees were selected according to the data at the end of 2004. The results were shown that 12 families among the provenances were grown faster over the family mean about 6.50%, 12.31%, and 28.54% in height, breast diameter and volume respectively. Sixteen selected individuals among the standing families were 18.05 %, 38.79%, 100.55% over family mean, which the fastest growing individuals increased 44.07%, 62.91%, and 224.92% respectively. Combinating of the selection of superior families and individual tree selection, the author found that the distribution of the families fitting Songjiang area trend toward the more northern latitude and more eastern longitude of midsouth the United States of America.
