Abstract: The ultra-structure of Liriodendron chinense (Hemsl.) Sarg.×L. tulipifera L. pollen was studied by transmission electron microscope. Correlative physiological indexes were determined during the development of bud. The results showed that the form of abortive microspore mother cell was abnormal, the cytoplasm was condensed and the structure of organelle was fuzzy at the initial stage of anther development. Then it lost division function and couldn’t under go meiosis. Generally normal microspore mother cells were round or oval. The cell whose cytoplasm was abundant and organelle structure was clear could complete the normal meiosis. Contrarily, it only could enter meiosis but not finish it. So the normal tetrad didn’t come into being. And the deformed tapetum cell caused stasis of anther development, disintegrating of cells, fusing, piling up and deforming. At the same time, the content of RNA, protein and amino acids reduced constantly in the course of stamen development.
