This paper gives a brief account of the NL-1 Type Saw-Chain Cutting Apparatus which was designed and developed by the Logging Machinery Teaching Group of Nanjing Institute of Forestry in 1973-1977. It was built to study the rules of the movement of log-cutting by the chain saw, and to find the optimum working conditions so as to find out some reliable basic data for further designing. The experience of using this apparatus in the recent years showed that it played an important role both in academic and in scientific research work.
