Abstract: Ash contents, gross caloric values and ash free caloric values at different ages were important information for exploiting and utilizing energy of Quercus variabilis. Caloric values and ash contents in different tissues of Q. variabilis at five different ages were studied in this paper. Results showed that average ash contents decreased in the order of the 46th, 36th, 17th, 57th and 27th year. Ash contents of branch or trunk were lower than that of leave or bark. Average gross caloric values decreased in the order of the 27th, 57th, 36th, 17th and 46th year. Gross caloric values of leave, bark and trunk were not significantly correlated with ash contents, while that of branch were great significantly negative correlated with ash contents in negative manner. Average gross caloric values were also significantly negatively correlated with ash contents. Gross caloric values of branch or trunk were lower than that of leave or bark. Average ash free caloric values decreased in the order of the 57th, 27th, 36th, 17th and 46th year. Ash free caloric values of branch or trunk were lower than that of leave or bark. From the view of caloric values and operational cost of energy forest, Q. variabilis of the 27th year was the perfect age of operating energy forest among the five ages under investigation.
