Abstract

Preparation of furfural from Camellia Oleifera hull has been investigated. Experiments show that 10.5% Yield (analytical result) of furfural is obtained. Main technological conditions are as follows: (1) Raw material (hull) with 15% Moisture content being mixed with sulfuric acid and soaked in a period of 24 hours or material crashed without soaking; (2) Ratio of material to 10% H2SO4 Solution (by weight) -1:0.3; (3)Pressure of reactor-5kg/cm2. If the reacting pressure of the reactor is up to 6-7kg/cm2, the yeild of furfural can be 1.0-1.5% higher than that of 5kg/cm2 and the operation period can also be shortened.Experiments also show that the formation of organic acid by using Camellia (leifera hull is exceedingly higher than that of cotton seed hull (100% higher). It is considered to be one of the most important discovery in our experimentsSimilar results are obtained in probuctive scale. Both the end products of furfural and sodium acetate meet the specification requirement. The results of this present research provide a broad potential of integrated utilization of such forest residues and have been proved to be economically feasible.
