Abstract: Leaf area index(LAI)is an important parameter of terrestrial ecosystem models. This paper analyzed the spatial-temporal variations of LAI in Jiangxi province during 2000—2011, which was retrieved from MODIS-MOD09A1 dataset、land cover and 4-scale geometric optical model. The results showed that:(1)the LAI presented noticeable seasonal variations, and the highest value of which(July, 4.8)was about 5.6 times of the lowest(January, 0.85);(2)During from 2000 to 2011, the average LAI of growing seasons decreased 0.048 per year, while average LAI of growing season increased 0.125 per year during 2000 to 2007, but the average LAI of growing season decreased during 2008—2011;(3)The average LAI during 2000 to 2011 exhibited considerable changes among different vegetation types. Evergreen needle leaf forest had the highest LAI(5.67), followed by evergreen broad leaf forest(4.57), mixed forest(4.01),deciduous broad leaf forest(3.17),mixed crop and natural vegetation(2.08),closed shrub(1.92),crop(1.85). The average LAI of whole province was 3.60 during 2000—2011.
