Abstract: An investigation on water-holding capacity of litter layer in 4 typical forest types was conducted in upper reaches of Hunhe river. Results indicated that the total amount of litter in order of size was Larix kaempferi plantation(21.89 t/hm2)>Quercus liaotungensis natural secondary forest(18.58 t/hm2)>the mixed forest of Uglans mandshurica,Acer mono, and Fraxinus rhynchophylla(15.03 t/hm2)>the mixed forest of Abies nephrolepis,Betula platyphylla and Maackia amurensis(14.38 t/hm2). The maximum water-holding capacity of litter in order of size was Larix kaempferi plantation(55.93 t/hm2)>Quercus liaotungensis natural secondary forest(50.42 t/hm2)>the mixed forest of U. mandshurica,A. mono, and F. rhynchophylla(37.84 t/hm2)>the mixed forest of A. nephrolepis,B. platyphylla and M. amurensis(35.84 t/hm2).The modified interception water capacity of litter in order of size was L. kaempferi plantation(42.72 t/hm2)>Q. liaotungensis natural secondary forest(39.09 t/hm2)>the mixed forest of U. mandshurica,A. mono, and F. rhynchophylla(27.41 t/hm2)>the mixed forest of A. nephrolepis,B. platyphylla, and M. amurensis(25.94 t/hm2). Based on the result, L. kaempferi plantation and Q. liaotungensis natural secondary forest had the highest litter storage and water-holding capacity among the four type forests, there both forest pattern were suitable for water-holding forest construction.
