Abstract: This study was undertaken to determine the natural decay resistance of wood and flakeboards from nine hardwoods growing on southern pine sites in U. S. A. The solid wood test specimens, which were cut from the same logs as flakes for the flakeboard, were used for the purpose of comparison. Two test fungi, i. e. Lenzites trabea Pers. ex Fr. (Lt) and Polyporus versicolor L. ex Fr. (Pv), were used. The results indicated that effect of Lt on weight loss was significantly-greater than that of Pv for all nine species of hardwoods and their flakeboards. As expected, solid white oak was highly resistant to both Lt and Pv. However, the decay resistance of the white oak flakeboard was not as effective. Within the range of experiment, the white ash flakeboards were the most resistant and the sweetbay and American elm flakeboards were the least resistant to both Pv and Lt after 12 weeks of exposure.
