Abstract: Three kinds of acrylate emulsion adhesive modified with aluminum hydroxide(ATH), melamine pyrophosphate(MP)and MP/pentaerythritol(PER)were prepared by mechanical mixing method. The effects of the types, the amounts and the ratios of the flame retardant on the fire retardant behavior, mechanical property and the thermal stability of the acrylate emulsion adhesive were compared. The results showed that the tensile strength of the adhesive decreased and limiting oxygen index(LOI)increased with the increment of supplementing amount of the flame retardant, and adhesive modified with ATH had higher residue content at the same level with the comparision of the other two flame-retardants’ systems. The cone calorimeter results indicated that the addition of various flame retardant could effectively reduce the heat release rate(HRR), the mass loss rate(MLR)and the smoke production rate(SPR)of the adhesive. The scanning electron microscopy(SEM)showed that the adhesive modified with the ratio of intumescent flame retardant MP/PER to 3/1 had the best flame retardant effect.
